Cleanings & Check-ups
The Appointment That Prevents All the Other Ones.
Regular dental cleanings and checkups play a critical role in maintaining not just a healthy smile, but overall well-being. Even with consistent brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Professional cleanings remove these deposits, helping to prevent issues before they become painful or costly to treat.
Making dental visits part of your regular health routine is a proactive step toward protecting your confidence, comfort, and overall health for years to come.
Cleanings at our Wexford, PA office are unhurried. If it has been six months or six years since your last visit, the appointment starts the same way — with a look at where things actually stand, and a plan you can agree to before anything is done.
Cleanings & Check-ups at EZ Dental Studio
A routine visit is really two appointments in one: the cleaning, which removes what brushing cannot reach, and the exam, which looks for problems while they are still small and cheap to fix.
Most patients come in twice a year and leave with nothing to schedule. That is the goal. When we do find something, you will hear exactly what it is, how urgent it is, and what happens if you wait — not a list of treatments you never asked about.
Professional Cleaning
Hardened tartar is removed from above and below the gum line, followed by polishing to lift surface stain. This is the part brushing and flossing genuinely cannot do at home, no matter how careful you are.
Comprehensive Exam & Digital X-Rays
A tooth-by-tooth check for decay, cracks, worn fillings, and gum changes, supported by low-dose digital images that show what is happening between and beneath the teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening
A quick, painless check of your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat at every routine exam. It takes about a minute and it is the single most valuable minute of the visit.
Benefits of Cleanings & Check-Ups
Routine visits do more than keep your teeth clean:
- Prevents cavities by removing plaque buildup
- Reduces risk of gum disease (gingivitis & periodontitis)
- Keeps your breath fresh
- Removes stains for a brighter smile
- Early detection of dental problems (decay, fractures, infections)
- Oral cancer screening at routine exams
- Protects existing dental work (crowns, bridges, implants)
What to Expect at Your Visit
A routine appointment follows a simple sequence:
- A short review of your health history and any changes since your last visit
- Digital X-rays, when they are due or when something needs a closer look
- Removal of plaque and tartar from every surface, including below the gum line
- Polishing and flossing to finish, with a fluoride treatment if it is indicated
- A tooth-by-tooth exam and oral cancer screening by Dr. Zimmermann
- A clear summary of what he found — and a written plan only if something needs doing
Plan on about an hour. First visits run a little longer because of the full set of records.

Comfortable Even If You Haven’t Been in Years
A cleaning is the easiest appointment in dentistry, but that does not help much if walking through the door is the hard part. Sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, a bad experience somewhere else — these are the reasons people put off a visit until something hurts, and we hear them constantly.
Tell us before we start and we will work around it: numbing gel for sensitive areas, breaks whenever you need them, and a hygienist who stops the moment you raise a hand. For patients who need more than that, EZ Dental Studio offers nitrous oxide and oral sedation — learn more about sedation dentistry.
Why Every 6 Months?
- Plaque hardens into tartar in as little as 24–72 hours, and can’t be removed by brushing alone
- Early problems are often painless, so regular visits catch issues before they get worse
- Helps maintain consistent oral and overall health
Six months is the default, not the rule. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, diabetes, or dry mouth from medication often do better on a three- or four-month schedule. We will tell you honestly which group you are in.
Why Choose EZ Dental Studio?
EZ Dental Studio treats every cleaning and exam with genuine care and attention. Our friendly team creates a comfortable, stress-free experience while providing gentle, thorough cleanings that support long-term oral health.
During exams we check carefully for early signs of trouble so nothing is missed, and the latest dental technology lets us deliver precise, efficient care — so patients feel confident, valued, and supported at every step.
Dr. Erich Zimmermann, DDS, FICOI, performs the exam himself at every routine visit. Because we are a small practice, you see the same dentist and the same team each time — which is exactly why small changes get noticed here before they turn into treatment.
Cleanings & Check-ups: Common Questions
Does a dental cleaning hurt?
For most patients, no — it is pressure and vibration rather than pain. Sensitivity usually comes from inflamed gums or exposed roots, and both can be managed with numbing gel and a gentler technique. Tell us where it is tender before we start rather than after.
What if I haven’t been to a dentist in years?
Then you are in very good company, and you will not get a lecture about it. We take records, tell you plainly what we see, and prioritize it — comfort and infection first, cosmetics last. You do not have to do everything at once.
How long does a cleaning and exam take?
About an hour for an established patient. A first visit runs closer to seventy-five minutes because of the full exam and initial X-rays. Heavy tartar buildup can add time, and we would rather book it properly than rush.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
No. Bitewing images are typically taken about once a year, and a full set every few years, adjusted to your risk of decay. Digital sensors use a fraction of the radiation of older film, and we take images when they will change a decision — not on autopilot.
My gums bleed when I brush — is that normal?
Common, but not normal. Bleeding is usually the first sign of gingivitis, which is reversible at this stage with a thorough cleaning and better technique at home. Left alone for long enough it becomes periodontitis, which is not reversible.
Will a cleaning remove coffee or wine stains?
Polishing lifts most surface staining, and many patients are surprised how much brighter their teeth look afterward. Deeper discoloration inside the enamel will not budge with a cleaning — that is what professional whitening is for, and a cleaning is the right first step before it.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning treats healthy gums at and just under the gum line. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is a treatment for active gum disease — it goes further beneath the gums, is usually done with numbing, and often takes two visits. We only recommend it when the measurements and X-rays support it, and we will show you those numbers.
At what age should children start coming in?
Around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits are short and mostly about familiarity — the goal is a child who is not afraid of the chair by the time they actually need something done.
Does insurance cover cleanings and exams?
Preventive care is the best-covered category in most dental plans, and two cleanings a year are frequently covered at or near one hundred percent. Coverage for additional cleanings, fluoride, and X-rays varies, so our team verifies your specific benefits before your appointment.
How much does a cleaning cost without insurance?
It depends on whether you need a routine cleaning or treatment for gum disease, and we cannot tell which honestly until we look. You will get an exact figure in writing before any work begins — a preventive visit should never end in a surprise bill.
