Sedation Dentistry

Get the Dental Care You’ve Been Putting Off — Calm, Relaxed, and Without the Fear.

Many people avoid the dentist because of anxiety, fear, or past negative experiences. Sedation dentistry allows patients to receive the care they need in a calm, relaxed, and comfortable environment.

At EZ Dental Studio, sedation dentistry is designed to help patients feel at ease while receiving high-quality dental treatment. Whether you experience mild nervousness or significant dental anxiety, sedation can make your visit smooth and stress-free.

Sedation dentistry uses safe, carefully administered medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. While under sedation, patients remain comfortable and calm while the dentist performs treatment.

If it has been years since your last appointment, you are not the exception here in Wexford, PA — you are a large part of who we see. There is no lecture waiting for you, and no judgment about how long it has been. We start where you are and move at a pace you can handle.

Sedation Dentistry at EZ Dental Studio

Sedation is not one single thing. It ranges from a mask that takes the edge off for twenty minutes to a medication that makes a long appointment feel like it lasted five minutes. We offer several options depending on the procedure and on how anxious you actually are.

During your consultation we go through your medical history, your medications, and what specifically bothers you about dental visits — the sounds, the needles, the loss of control — and match the level of sedation to that. Most patients need far less than they expect.

Oral Sedation

A prescribed medication taken before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed throughout treatment. You stay awake and able to respond, but the anxiety fades and time passes quickly. Because the effects linger for several hours, you will need someone to drive you to and from the office.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A mild form of sedation breathed through a small nose mask. It takes effect within minutes, keeps you fully aware and in control, and wears off almost as quickly once the mask comes off — so most patients drive themselves home and go back to their day.

Local Anesthesia & Comfort Options

Sedation calms your mind; local anesthetic handles the tooth. We use topical gel before every injection, warm the anesthetic, and go slowly — and for patients who are hard to numb, we take the extra time to get it right rather than starting before you are ready.

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is a good fit for patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or fear
  • Have had difficult dental experiences in the past
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Need multiple procedures completed in one visit
  • Have sensitive teeth or difficulty getting numb
  • Simply want a more relaxed dental appointment

Sedation can help make dental visits far more comfortable and manageable.

What Happens on the Day of Your Appointment

A sedation visit follows a simple sequence:

  1. A short health review and a check of your blood pressure and oxygen levels
  2. Sedation is started — either the medication you took at home takes hold, or the nitrous mask goes on
  3. Local anesthetic is placed once you are already comfortable and relaxed
  4. Treatment is completed while we monitor you continuously
  5. A recovery period in the chair until you are steady on your feet
  6. Written aftercare instructions, and a call from us the next day to check in

You can raise a hand and stop at any point. Nothing happens without you knowing about it first.

Safe and Carefully Monitored

Your safety and comfort are always our top priorities. During sedation dentistry, patients are closely monitored throughout the entire procedure to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

Dr. Erich Zimmermann, DDS, FICOI, has extensive experience in sedation dentistry and uses modern techniques and monitoring to provide safe, predictable care.

Before any sedation is given, we review your full medical history, current prescriptions, supplements, and any previous reactions to anesthesia. If something in that history means sedation is not the right choice for you, we will say so — and we will find another way to keep you comfortable.

Dental Care Without Fear

If anxiety or fear has kept you from getting the dental care you need, sedation dentistry can help you regain control of your oral health in a comfortable and supportive setting.

Contact EZ Dental Studio today to learn more about how sedation dentistry can make your dental visits relaxed, comfortable, and stress-free.

You are also welcome to come in just to talk. No chair, no instruments — a conversation about what would need to happen and in what order. Many of our patients start exactly that way.

Why Choose EZ Dental Studio?

At EZ Dental Studio, sedation is not an add-on we sell — it is a tool we use so anxious patients can finally get treatment done properly, in fewer visits, without dreading each one.

Dr. Erich Zimmermann, DDS, FICOI, has extensive experience treating patients who describe themselves as the worst dental patient in the world. He has heard it before, and it does not change how you are treated here.

Because we are a small practice, the same dentist who plans your sedation is the one who performs your treatment. You are not handed off between providers, and you never have to explain your history twice.

Sedation Dentistry: Common Questions

Will I be asleep during treatment?

No. The sedation we offer is conscious sedation — you stay awake and able to respond, you are simply relaxed enough that the appointment stops feeling stressful. General anesthesia, where you are fully unconscious, is a hospital-based service and is not what we provide.

Will I remember anything afterward?

With nitrous oxide, yes — you will remember the visit clearly, it just will not bother you. With oral sedation, many patients remember very little, and long appointments often feel like they lasted a few minutes.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

For healthy patients who have been properly screened, yes. The safeguards are the screening beforehand, continuous monitoring during treatment, and honest answers from you about medications and medical conditions. Certain conditions — pregnancy, some respiratory issues, some drug interactions — change what we can use, which is exactly why we review it first.

Do I still need a numbing shot if I’m sedated?

Usually, yes. Sedation controls anxiety, not sensation. The good news is that the injection is given after you are already relaxed, and most sedated patients say it is the part they notice least.

Can I drive myself home?

After nitrous oxide, almost always — it clears within about 15 minutes of the mask coming off. After oral sedation, no. You will need a responsible adult to drive you both ways and stay with you for a few hours afterward.

How long do the effects last?

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes. Oral sedation depends on the medication and dose, but you should plan on feeling drowsy for the rest of the day and avoid work, exercise, and important decisions until the next morning.

What do I need to do before my sedation appointment?

You will get written instructions specific to your medication, but generally: follow the fasting guidance we give you, take your regular prescriptions unless we tell you otherwise, wear comfortable clothing, and arrange your ride in advance.

Is sedation available for children or older patients?

Nitrous oxide is widely used and well tolerated across a broad range of ages. Oral sedation depends heavily on individual health, weight, and current medications, so it is decided case by case after a consultation — not over the phone.

Can I get several procedures done in one visit?

Often, yes, and this is one of the strongest reasons to use sedation. Combining treatment into one longer appointment means fewer visits to be anxious about and less total time in the chair. We will tell you honestly what is realistic to combine safely.

Does insurance cover sedation, and how much does it cost?

Nitrous oxide is sometimes partially covered; oral sedation frequently is not, and coverage varies widely between plans. The cost also depends on the length of the appointment and the option you choose. Our team will check your specific benefits and give you a written figure before anything is scheduled — no surprises after the fact.
